Out of the 7Ex-BBMP corporators who contested the Karnataka assembly elections, only one has won
Bengaluru: Out of the seven former BBMP corporators who contested the Karnataka assembly elections, only one has won and entered the assembly.
Former corporators Umesh Shetty, Anand Kumar, Shivakumar, R. Chandru, Keshav Murthy, Ravindra lost by a narrow margin. Jayanagar’s BJP candidate CK Ramamurthy narrowly defeated Congress’ Soumya Reddy by 16 votes.
Ramamurthy had planned to contest the 2018 by-election after the death of sitting MLA BN Vijay Kumar. But the party fielded late Vijay Kumar’s brother Prahlad against Soumya Reddy. But Ramamurthy told MEDIA that he got the ticket this time with difficulty and he got a lead of 16 votes during the counting of votes and now he is the Jayanagar MLA.
Umesh Shetty representing Nagarabhavi ward had prepared to contest against M. Krishnappa from Vijayanagar, but Ravindra was sent to Govindarajanagar as incumbent MLA and Minister V. Somanna contested from Varuna and Chamarajanagar. It is interesting that Somanna was also a corporator earlier. Umesh Shetty lost against Priya Krishna of Congress by 12,000 votes.
Similarly, H. Ravindra, the former corporator of Hosahalli, Vijayanagar, has contested for the second time from the Vijayanagar assembly constituency and has been defeated by more than 8,000 votes.
Former BBMP Health Committee President S. Anand Kumar lost to BJP’s S. Raghu in CV Raman Nagar by 16,000 votes. During the campaign, Anand managed to mobilize the masses and united many leaders. However, they could not retain the slum voters of Anandapuram and Sudhamanagar. Raghu was also once a corporator.
Like Anand Kumar, former BBMP member Shivakumar from Shantala Nagar ward contested against sitting MLA NA Haris from Shantalanagar and lost by 7 thousand votes.
N Chandru, a former corporator of Ramaswamy Palya, contested from Shivajinagar, but voters did not pay much attention to him due to his criminal background. Rizwan defeated Arshad by 20,000 votes. In Mahalakshmi Layout, former corporator Keshav Murthy contested against K. Gopalaiah and failed. It is noteworthy that Gopalaya was also once a corporator.
