BBMP nameplate cannot be used on garbage vehicles!

BENGALURU: The Greater Bangalore Municipal Corporation has banned contractors involved in waste management from displaying corporation stickers on garbage collection vehicles.

BBMP has brought a new rule regarding garbage vehicles. BBMP nameplates cannot be placed on garbage vehicles belonging to the corporation. The new order will apply to all vehicles supplied through contractors. If there is an accident due to garbage vehicles and there is death. BBMP Special Commissioner of Solid Waste has issued an order that the owner of the vehicle should pay compensation in the form of fine.

It is said that this order is being made in the background of increasing number of accidents caused by BBMP garbage trucks. Besides, the BBMP has issued an order to stop the installation of nameplates on their own vehicles by anonymous persons. 

This rule will apply to all vehicles on contract involved in solid waste management, the corporation said in a notification. The corporation clarified that if any accident occurs and people lose their lives, the contractors concerned should provide compensation to the victims.

The notice also warned of criminal prosecution against owners of vehicles using BBMP stickers, requiring drivers to have license, fitness certificate and vehicle insurance at the time of inspection. BBMP has asked marshals and junior health inspectors to verify the documents. BBMP has advised contractors who do not have necessary documents to get written permission from Area Superintendent Engineers as soon as possible.

BBMP Solid Waste Management Commissioner Harish Kumar said, ‘We have outsourced garbage collection. But when a garbage truck or tipper accident happens, BBMP is blamed. We have nothing to do with the accident, but looking at the BBMP stickers put by the contractor, it is assumed that this vehicle belongs to the corporation. He said that this is affecting our reputation.
